August: National Hair Loss Awareness Month

Common Concerns / August 1, 2019

Hair Loss Treatment at evolv Medical Aesthetics

August is National Hair Loss Awareness month, so it’s an appropriate time to review new science and state of the art therapeutic options for men and women suffering from chronic hair loss.  By the age of 35, two thirds of American men will experience some degree of hair loss, and by the age of 50, approximately 85% of men will have significantly thinning hair (as I can personally attest to)!  Although less recognized in females, hair loss is a condition affecting nearly one third of women at or above the age of 40, creating a significant impact on everyday life both aesthetically, psychologically and socially.  Recent studies reveal that there are over 40 million men and over 25 million women in the U.S. and over 1.5 billion people worldwide experiencing hair loss.

What causes hair loss?

As with many health conditions, genetics and inherited characteristics play the most significant role in hair loss.  Male pattern hair loss is an inherited predisposition and may come from either side of the family.  The male hormone testosterone combined with genetic susceptibility are the primary factors and the condition is also known as androgenic alopecia or male/female pattern baldness. Chronic hair loss in men begins above the temples and progresses to a well-defined pattern in the crown and forehead.  Female hair loss may also be influenced by genetics, hormonal changes and menopause as well as stress and medical conditions.  Chronic hair loss in women is characterized by diffused, gradual thinning of the hair more often than pattern baldness.

What treatments are proven to be effective?

At evolv Medical Aesthetics, only research and clinically proven and FDA approved treatment options are utilized. Here are some of the new options available for reducing hair loss in men and women as well as improving overall scalp and hair health.

– Viviscal Professional:

Viviscal Pro is a 100% drug free oral supplement backed by over 25 years of peer-reviewed research clinically proven to promote existing hair growth and improve overall health of the scalp and hair follicles.  The proprietary marine complex Amino Mar plus essential vitamins and minerals has been shown to result in thicker, fuller hair within 3-4 months.  The effectiveness of Viviscal Pro is backed by over 10 published clinical studies.  A recent review demonstrated that regular use resulted in a 12% increase in hair diameter and an 80% increase in number of terminal hairs.

-Ducray Dermatology Laboratories Densiage, Anaphase and Neopeptide Products:

Ducray labs is a world leader in dermatological research, and evolv is excited to provide their most recent clinically proven products for hair and scalp health and hair loss.  Their research shows that the hair and scalp, just like skin, can lose its firmness, elasticity and radiance with aging.  Their Densiage Collection is a new and innovative system to address and treat the intrinsic and extrinsic causes of hair and scalp aging.  Regular use resulted in an increase in hair volume and in hair density in over 80% of study participants.  Neopeptide Hair Lotion for men and women reduces the appearance of hair loss, boosts volume and promotes stronger, healthier hair while their Anaphase Shampoo and Conditioner specifically reduces hair loss by effectively preparing the hair and scalp and has resulted in a 6X greater absorption of Minoxidil in the hair follicle.

evolv Alopecia Topical Solution:

This topical preparation is custom formulated for our male and female hair loss patients by the world-renowned Prescribers Choice compounding pharmacy.  This unique combination of active and proven ingredients has been selected to produce an outcome that is clinically different to that which is commercially available. This compounded pharmaceutical grade formulation contains the optimal concentration of minoxidil (Rogaine), finastenide (Propecia) and Vitamin A (Retin-A).  Minoxidal is FDA approved for both the prevention of hair loss as well as re-growth in men and women.  Finastenide is FDA approved and is useful in treating hormonal (androgenic alopecia) hair loss.  Tretinoin (Retin-A) improves hair follicular and scalp health and significantly increases total product penetration and efficacy. The ingredients in evolv Alopecia Topical Solution are customized to provide individualized and optimal results in reducing hair loss and stimulating growth in both men and women.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Regenerative Therapy:

PRP injectable therapy provides a powerful and natural method of harnessing the body’s rejuvenate power to stimulate hair growth and improve overall scalp and hair health.  Our own platelets contain growth factors and other cell signaling factors (known as peptides and cytokines) that can be potent natural stimulants to repair, restore and stimulate hair growth and overall scalp health.  After a simple blood draw in the office, the collection is processed and combined with stem cells or stem cell growth factors (such as AAPE) and injected into the scalp resulting in a powerful combination utilizing regenerative medicine principles.  Multiple research and clinical studies have demonstrated the unique and long-lasting benefits for hair rejuvenation utilizing this technique.

Laser Light Therapy:

The Theradome LH80 PRO is the world’s most advanced laser hair therapy device available for home therapy.  Biomedically designed lasers have proven efficacy in reducing hair loss and stimulating growth without any side effects or downtime.  The Theradome Pro delivers maximal energy and penetrates the scalp at a wavelength that is optimal for clinical hair restoration while also providing maximal scalp coverage.

Surgical Hair Restoration with NeoGraft:

For the patients, men and women, with advanced loss, surgical hair restoration is the most effective option.  Unlike traditional strip grafts that can leave visible scars and donor sites, the unique NeoGraft Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method leaves no visible scars and creates a very natural hairline by transplanting individual hairs from the scalp areas not susceptible to hair loss.  This minimally invasive office procedure can be done privately and with sedation and local anesthesia.  There are no scalpel incisions, no sutures and the recovery time is the fastest of any surgical option for hair restoration.

Hair loss can have a significant impact on the quality of life for many men as well as women.  Science and research are providing exciting and effective options for improving scalp and hair health and reducing the signs of aging and hair loss.  At evolv Plastic Surgery and Medical Aesthetics we are dedicated to finding the most proven and individualized solutions for our patients experiencing hair loss and thinning.  If you would like to learn more about these exciting therapeutic options and the application of regenerative medicine techniques in hair rejuvenation, please feel free to discuss with our professional staff.

We hope you all enjoy the rest of your summer!
