How Tummy Tuck Works
Step 01.
As with all aesthetic surgical procedures at EVOLV Plastic Surgery, a tummy tuck in Toledo, Ohio with Dr. Frank Barone, preparation involves a complete evaluation, examination, discussion of goals, and creation of a personalized and comprehensive surgical plan. Photo documentation and planning incision location options and extent are also considered. Patient photos are reviewed, and choices are discussed considering costs, recovery time, post-procedure care, and desired expectations and results.
Step 02.
Tummy tuck surgery in Toledo is done in a fully accredited outpatient surgery center under a short-acting general anesthetic that minimizes recovery time and is administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist and experienced licensed nursing staff. Revisions or minor procedures may be done in some cases in the office under a local anesthetic with oral sedation when appropriate.
Step 03.
Tummy tuck incisions will depend upon the amount and location of skin and tissue laxity to be corrected. Incision placement is planned where it will allow proper correction and be less noticeable. The final scar is typically located in the ‘bikini line’ of the lower abdomen. The scar length will depend on the amount of skin laxity to be corrected. Excess fat removal by ultrasonic (Vaser) or power-assisted liposuction is done through small access incisions typically within the skin to be removed or hidden in natural creases.
Step 04.
After general anesthesia is administered, a dilute solution of adrenaline and lidocaine (tumescent solution) is diffused throughout the fatty tissue to be removed. This is essential to reduce bleeding and discomfort, allowing lower levels of general anesthetic and preparing the tissue for Vaser treatment. After fatty excess is removed, the appropriate amounts of skin and laxity are excised from the treatment area and, if needed, the abdominal muscles are repaired and repositioned. The lower skin and deep tissues are elevated and anchored for support. Surgical drains are sometimes placed if necessary. Long-acting nerve blocks (Exparel) are placed, and a mildly compressive surgical garment is applied to complete the procedure.
Step 05.
You will return to the office in a few days after surgery for your first dressing change. If abdominal muscles are repaired, you will usually begin slowly walking on the second day after surgery. You will see visible improvements immediately and they will continue to get better as swelling and bruising subside. If drains are placed, they are removed when drainage subsides in 1-2 weeks.
Body contouring procedures on the abdomen, thighs, and hips generally require longer elevation and compression garments until the swelling subsides. Post-operative therapeutic treatments with lymphatic massage, LED LightStim bed treatment and other proven modalities are available to reduce swelling, discomfort, and downtime and to minimize scar appearance. You will be given specific instructions and recommendations on activities and care of the operative site at each visit.
