Brown Spots

About

Brown or age spots, referred to as hyperpigmentation, result from the ultraviolet radiation in sunlight.

Unprotected exposure results in the stimulation of our pigment-producing cells in an attempt to protect the deeper layers of skin from damage and skin cancer. Excessive or unprotected exposure can result in overproduction of pigment (known as melanin) which clumps and appears as pigmented spots or freckles.

Causes

Pigmentation occurs in the skin as a result of sun exposure, hormonal fluctuations, and after trauma to the skin.
Pigmented spots or moles may also develop genetically in normal skin development.
Unprotected sun exposure as well as pregnancy and some medical conditions can stimulate excess pigment production which can result in superficial pigmentation or pigment excess in the deeper layers of the skin (known as melasma).
