What It Is

Excessively large breasts can cause physical as well as emotional distress for women of any age.  Disproportionately larger breasts or macromastia can result in pain of the upper back, shoulders, and neck due to the excess weight and poor support. Breast reduction in Toledo may be performed to address these medical issues or can also be done for cosmetic reasons.  Dr. Frank Barone has extensive experience with a variety of surgical techniques for reducing breast excess and improving and balancing breast shape to relieve symptoms or simply improve self-image.  Whatever your priorities and concerns may be, the EVOLV staff takes the time to get to know each patient personally, and special consideration is taken to design each surgical plan around your personal goals, concerns, and lifestyle.

How Breast Reduction Works

Step 01.

As with all aesthetic surgical procedures at EVOLV Plastic Surgery, breast reduction in Toledo workup involves complete family and medical history, examination, discussion of goals and review of all options.  Patients with well documented physical problems resulting from excessive breast size may be eligible for insurance coverage. All costs will be itemized and reviewed with the EVOLV Patient Coordinator. Preoperative evaluation also includes photo documentation and an extensive discussion and review of incision size and placement and related concerns.

Step 02.

Breast reduction surgery in Toledo is always done in an accredited outpatient surgery center under a light general anesthetic administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist and experienced licensed nursing staff.

Step 03.

You will meet with your surgeon in the pre-op area for marking and incision design and planning. Incision placement and length will depend on the degree of reduction and correction needed and the amount of tissue and skin laxity. The goal is to design a limited and well-hidden incisional scar that allows the necessary lifting and reshaping of the breast.  Most often this is accomplished by a ‘vertical reduction’ technique that leaves an incision around the areola and then extends vertically to the fold under the breast. Incision size will depend also upon the degree of reduction but Dr. Barone prefers the smaller vertical scar technique which does not leave a visible scar on the side of the breast or in the midline as does the traditional inverted ’T’ technique.

Step 04.

After making the planned incision, the nipple and areola are preserved on the underlying breast tissue so they can be repositioned, and nerves and blood supply maintained.  A solution that constricts blood vessels and blocks sensory nerves (‘tumescent solution’) is perfused into the lateral breast and axilla and then VASER ultrasonic liposuction is performed in these areas to remove excess fatty tissue and preserve the sensory nerves and blood vessels.  With minimal dissection, tissues are released and then secured with sutures as the breast is reduced and reshaped. Long-acting pain blocks (Exparel) or a nerve stimulator to decrease post-operative discomfort are preferred to reduce discomfort and downtime. Incisions are closed with dissolvable internal sutures and dressings and bra applied.  No drains are typically necessary.

Step 05.

You will return to the office in a few days after surgery for your first dressing change. You will usually experience some relief from preoperative symptoms and see the visible improvements immediately and they will continue to get better as swelling and bruising subside. We will give you specific instructions and recommendations on activities and care of the operative site at each visit. Your final breast reduction shape should restore a contour that is balanced and proportional to your body contour and result in relief from the majority or all your related preoperative symptoms.
