How Liposuction Works
Step 01.
As with all aesthetic surgical procedures at EVOLV Plastic Surgery, liposuction workup involves complete evaluation, examination, discussion of goals, and creation of a personalized, and comprehensive surgical plan.
Your surgeon will assist you in determining whether liposuction contouring alone or considering excess skin removal and lifting would best meet your expectations and goals. Discussion of non-surgical options, if appropriate, will also be done.
Patient photos are reviewed, and considerations are discussed, including incision location, additional procedures, recovery time, costs, and desired expectations and results.
Step 02.
Liposuction contouring surgery is done in an accredited outpatient surgery center under a light general or intravenous anesthetic administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist and experienced licensed nursing staff. Revisions or minor procedures may be done in some cases in the office procedure room under a local anesthetic with oral sedation when appropriate.
Step 03.
Incisions for liposuction in Toledo will depend upon the area of treatment. If skin removal such as a ‘tummy tuck’ or abdominoplasty is planned the incisions may be within the skin to be removed. Liposuction access incisions are small punctures and placement is planned where it will allow proper correction and be less noticeable.
Excess fat removal by ultrasonic (Vaser) or liposuction is done through small access incisions typically within the skin to be removed or hidden in natural creases.
Step 04.
After the planned anesthetic is given, a dilute solution of adrenaline and lidocaine (tumescent solution) is perfused throughout the surgical sites and fatty excess is removed. This is essential to minimize bleeding and discomfort allowing lower levels of general anesthetic and cooling the tissue for Vaser treatment.
If fat grafting is planned, a specific harvesting technique and fat collection system are used to purify and maximize fat cell viability. After releasing the fat with ultrasonic energy, the liquified fat is gently removed by gentle suction. If maximal tissue tightening is desired, the suctioned area is then treated with Renuvion JPlasma, a new and exciting technology that uses proprietary plasma energy to tighten the undersurface of the skin and tissue.
Long-acting nerve blocks (Exparel) for comfort are placed and a specialized compression garment is applied to complete the procedure.
Step 05.
You will return to the office in a few days after surgery for your first dressing change. We will remove skin sutures from the liposuction access sites for one week. You will see the visible improvements immediately and they will continue to get better as swelling and bruising subside.
Post-operative therapeutic treatments with lymphatic and sound wave massage, LED LightStim bed treatment, and other proven modalities will be available to significantly reduce swelling, discomfort, and downtime. We will give you specific instructions and recommendations on activities and care of the operative site at each visit.
