About this Treatment
Physician Peels
Physician chemical peels in Toledo are non-surgical, skin resurfacing procedures that use a specific medical acid solution to remove the damaged or aged outer layers of the skin and stimulate the growth of new cells.
The body will then generate new skin cells that will replace the removed outer layers resulting in improved and more youthful texture and tone of the skin, a reduction in excess pigmentation and, with some peels, lowering skin cancer risk by removal of cancer-prone and sun-damaged skin cells. Physician chemical peels require more training and are performed by your plastic surgeon and generally are deeper than aesthetician peels.
What It Is
Aging, sun damage, smoking, and other factors can result in the loss of the youthful and healthy features of the skin in addition to increasing sun-related skin cancer risk. Despite remarkable advances and improvements in education and medical skin care products and treatment options, previous sun exposure, smoking, and aging can result in significant loss of youthful and healthy skin characteristics as well as an increased risk of skin cancer. Although there are many effective and clinically proven options for reducing previous skin damage and the signs of aging, deeper chemical peeling by an experienced and qualified physician such as Dr. Frank Barone can remove much of the damaged and aged surface and stimulate the growth of youthful baby ‘cells’ and improved circulation to rejuvenate a healthy complexion as well as lower skin cancer risk.

How Physician Peels Work
Step 01.
As with all major aesthetic procedures at EVOLV Plastic Surgery, a workup for physician chemical peeling involves complete evaluation, examination, discussion of goals, and creation of a personalized and comprehensive aesthetic plan. Photo documentation and VISIA Skin Complexion Analysis, and thorough review and problem-based discussion of appropriate resurfacing options are conducted with each patient. Safe and optimal chemical peels in Toledo require significant and focused skin care preparation, education, and planning to avoid complications, reduce downtime and improve results. We review itemized costs and recovery time as well.
Step 02.
Physician chemical peels in Toledo can be done safely in the office treatment room with oral sedation, ProNox nitrous oxide gas, nerve blocks, and local anesthesia, or in the outpatient facility with either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia if other simultaneous procedures are planned.
Step 03.
Chemical peeling is a minimally invasive non-surgical procedure and no incisions are needed.
Step 04.
After planned sedation and injectable nerve blocks, if needed, we cleanse the skin with alcohol to remove oils and improve absorption. Eye protection with lubricant and, sometimes, corneal shields are placed.
Step 05.
After surgery, a maintenance program to minimize downtime and maximize results will be suggested, including skin care, manual lymphatic massage and ultrasound, medical makeup, LED photo biomodulation, and other clinically proven options that improve patient outcomes. We carefully apply the planned peel solution in sections and layers. A frost on the skin surface is seen initially and then resolves. Areas of deeper damage or more severe aging changes may receive second or multiple layers and passes.
Step 05.
After treatment completion, eye shields are removed, and specific growth factors or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) may be applied to the treated surface for improved healing. A numbing antioxidant iced slurry and growth factor balm are layered on the treated areas with cold compresses to complete the procedure.
Step 06.
You will return to the office a few days after surgery for post-treatment care and evaluation. A regimen with medical skin care products will be initiated in a specific sequence with each stage of healing. Lymphatic massage, red light phototherapy, and other proven options will reduce downtime and improve the comfort and quality of the result. Medical grade makeup and sunscreen will also be utilized and are important to consistency and optimal outcomes. It is extremely important to avoid sun exposure in the treated areas until cleared by your provider.

Frequently Asked Questions
There are many resurfacing options, such as laser, Renuvion J-Plasma, micro needling, and Genius RF micro needling (links for all) for addressing aging or damaged skin changes of the face and neck and restoring more youthful healthy skin. Finding honest and accurate information can be challenging at best for patients with cosmetic concerns. It is therefore extremely important for each patient to find a qualified and experienced professional that can be trusted to educate and inform transparently on the optimal aesthetic procedure and plan that is best to achieve not only their aesthetic goals but also respect their budget and tolerance for recovery time. When these priorities are met, for the appropriate patient, deeper physician chemical peeling can provide beautiful and youthful skin surface on its own or when combined with other aesthetic surgical procedures, enhance overall results with a comprehensive rejuvenation.
This is a common misconception but a properly done peel will increase skin thickness and tone. In addition to removing the outer damaged skin cell layer, the EVOLV peels stimulate new and increased growth from below of collagen, elastin, hyaluronic sugars, circulation, and the youthful components of healthy, young skin.
EVOLV Plastic Surgery and Medical Aesthetics offers many state-of-the-art non-surgical resurfacing options in addition to physician chemical peels in Toledo that can reduce the signs of aging and sun damage. EVOLV’s skin care treatment programs consist of a pre-treatment preparation period with a personalized skin care regimen, then after preparation the resurfacing treatment, and finally a post-treatment maintenance program which is essential to keeping and even enhancing the result. Your EVOLV skin care professional and physician will assist you in determining your best option based on costs, downtime tolerance, and goals.
Chemical peel costs will depend on many factors including the extent and area treated, peel depth, and whether or not other procedures are planned such as combined surgery or fat grafting, the type of anesthesia, and facility. It is important to remember that the costs include not only the procedure itself but also all post-treatment care, and this can be more prolonged with deeper peels. Optimal results and safety require consistent and conscientious post-care. You will be provided with a specific and itemized surgical quote from our EVOLV Patient Coordinator explaining and detailing all related costs.
This is a common question and one that must be carefully considered. When it comes to elective aesthetic procedures, informed patients make decisions based on three primary considerations: cost, downtime and, most importantly results. Therefore, it is so essential for each patient to find a qualified and experienced board-certified plastic surgeon that provides unbiased information and in whom they can trust. Price shopping frequently leads to unfavorable outcomes, complications, and expensive revisional procedures. The EVOLV physician peel programs improve the quality and youthful features of the skin and can lower skin cancer risk. Improving skin quality enhances the outcome of any other aesthetic or cosmetic surgery which is a significant additional benefit that patients particularly enjoy.
Recovery or downtime after chemical peel resurfacing will depend on the depth of the treatment and if applicable, the number and extent of accompanying procedures and therefore must be individualized. It is helpful to remember that ‘recovery’ is a process and goes thru stages. At EVOLV Plastic Surgery we have found that preparing and restoring optimal skin health with a personalized medical skin care program as well as extensive patient pre-operative teaching and education, specific supplements for healing, in addition to post-operative lymphatic and sound wave massage, and LED phototherapy can significantly reduce downtime and improve healing for chemical peel resurfacing as well as any aesthetic treatment. Our professional staff will review expected recovery times with you to assist with your post-procedure planning.
Chemical peel results and longevity are very much affected by numerous factors. These include patient age and genetics, pre/post treatment overall health and lifestyle, peel depth, and the type of medical acid used, and most importantly, post-treatment skin care and aesthetic maintenance services. In our experience, a personalized medical skin care program, along with aesthetic maintenance treatments and practicing healthy lifestyle habits can extend youthful results far longer than traditional peels or other skin treatment procedures.
There are a wide variety of chemical peels available at EVOLV ranging from very light ‘invisible’ peeling (ZO Enzymatic Peel and Acceleration Exfoliator (link)) with no downtime, moderate depth aesthetician peels (ZO 3 Step Peel) (link), and very deep physician peel treatments ( ZO Controlled Depth Peel and Modified Phenol Peel) (link) which have much longer downtimes but give the maximal correction and rejuvenation. The EVOLV medical aestheticians perform a variety of the light and moderate depth peels in the office while the deeper physician peels may be done in the office procedure room or, when the peel is combined with an aesthetic surgical procedure, in the outpatient facility under a light anesthetic. Peel selection will depend on the degree of aging and sun damage and the individualized goals of each patient. Dr. Barone and the EVOLV nurses and aestheticians have extensive experience and advanced training in each peel option as well as advanced skin care.
