The term ‘cellulite’ was introduced in the 1920s to represent the dimpling and nodularity appearance of the skin surface on the thighs, buttocks, hips, and abdomen primarily in females. The condition is most prevalent in women due to the unique architecture of the skin and underlying fat and connective tissue below the surface in females. Cellulite is a very common condition and affects more than 90% of all adult women.

Causes

Cellulite is the result of herniation or protrusion of fat under the skin (subcutaneous fat) within the connective tissue and bands anchoring the skin in females.
Cellulite may also result from excess fat or swelling within the compartments immediately below the skin surface.
Cellulite is a multifactorial condition and can be affected by genetics, skin laxity, loss of skin tone, and elasticity, skin thinning, and changes in fat content.
Contrary to popular belief, cellulite is not typically improved by weight loss, diet, exercise, massage, or topical skin creams alone.
