Surgical Hair Restoration
What is Surgical Hair Restoration?
Surgical hair restoration involves moving hair from one area to fill out another area of thinning hair or hair loss. Surgical hair restoration can restore a head of hair for a more youthful appearance. The procedure can be done using the follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS) or follicular unit extraction (FUE) method. The method will be chosen based on the extent of hair loss and the patient’s preference.
Surgical Hair Restoration Candidates
Hair thinning and loss is a common sign of aging, but can also be caused by other factors like genetics and hormones. Candidates for surgical hair restoration are those who experience thinning hair or hair loss and wish to restore their hair for a more youthful appearance. Candidates should be in good health in order to undergo the procedure and should have realistic expectations for their results. To be a candidate for surgical hair restoration, patients must have enough existing hair to be transplanted. A consultation with Dr. Barone or Dr. Koltz can determine if you are a good candidate for this type of hair restoration or not.
For surgical hair restoration, the scalp will first be cleaned and numbed. If the FUSS method is being used, a 6-10 inch strip of skin and hair follicles is taken from the back of the head where it can then be concealed by hair. The strip is then divided into many small grafts, each containing a few hair follicles. For the FUE method, the hair follicles are removed one by one, only leaving a small puncture behind. The next step for both methods is to place the grafts. Hair follicles are placed into tiny holes or slits in the scalp where hair loss has occurred. The process can take 4-8 hours depending on the technique being used and the number of hair follicles needing to be transplanted.
Surgical Hair Restoration Results
After surgical hair restoration, the scalp might be sensitive. Pain can be managed with pain medication for the first few days. Over the next two to three weeks, the transplanted hair will fall out, allowing for new growth. Patients can expect to see about 60% of their new hair growth after six to nine months. Hair will continue to grow about an inch per month, leading to a fuller, more youthful appearance. The results can last several months but cannot prevent future hair loss. A touch-up session might be required to maintain new hair growth.
Surgical Hair Restoration Cost
The cost of surgical hair restoration varies greatly from person to person, depending on the extent of hair loss and the technique being used. After an evaluation of the scalp and hair, patients will be given a quote for how much their particular hair restoration treatment will be.
