Chin Augmentation
Chin augmentation refers to procedures that can reshape and enhance the chin and surrounding jawline. Surgical chin augmentation typically involves placing an anatomic chin implant or less commonly, moving the lower chin bone forward to increase chin projection, also known as an ‘osseous genioplasty’ or ‘mentoplasty’.
Non-surgical chin augmentation refers to the use of injectable, FDA-approved fillers that are biologically identical and long-lasting.

Improving chin and jawline contour can have significant benefits in facial profile and appearance as well as provide balance with other facial features, such as the nose. If the chin is under-projecting and out of proportion, it may have a negative impact on the neckline, magnify the appearance of cheek jowls and loss of the jawline, and contribute to the appearance of a larger and out-of-balance nasal profile.
Safe and natural appearing chin enhancement can be accomplished surgically by the placement of a chin implant or, less commonly, sliding the lower chin bone forward. Non-surgical chin augmentation can be effectively done by injection of the patient’s own fat cells or, more commonly, by injectable dermal fillers.

How Chin Augmentation Works
Step 01.
Surgical: A thorough medical history and examination are done, with a discussion of goals and options.
Non-surgical fillers or fat grafting: A thorough medical history and examination are done with a discussion of goals and options along with photo documentation and discussion of outcome goals and facial analysis.
Step 02.
Surgical: Photo documentation is always done and 3D computer analysis is available if desired. Measurements are taken and we select a custom anatomic implant based on patient anatomy and outcome goals.
Non-surgical fillers or fat grafting: For injectable fillers, options and costs are reviewed. If fat grafting is considered, donor site options and costs are also discussed along with a review of before and after patient photos.
Step 03.
Surgical: After local, IV, or general anesthesia is obtained, an access incision is made either intraorally, or externally in the crease under the chin. A precise pocket for their implant is created and a trial sizer is placed to determine implant choice.
Non-surgical fillers or fat grafting: A topical numbing anesthetic cream is applied to the chin area 1 hour before treatment. Local anesthetic injections will be used in donor sites and chin areas if fat grafting is planned. The fat grafts are purified and prepared.
Step 04.
Surgical: After antibiotic irrigation, the anatomic implant is placed above the mandibular bone and secured.
Non-surgical fillers or fat grafting: We incrementally inject filler until the desired contour is reached.
Step 05.
Surgical: Incisions are closed, and a light tape dressing is applied.
Step 06.
Surgical: If oral placement, sutures will dissolve; if submittal approach, we remove sutures in 5 to 7 days.

Not at all. Natural appearing and safe results require experience, training, and the highest-grade FDA approved biomaterials. Individualizing the right procedure to each patient’s unique anatomy and goals requires experienced aesthetic judgement and proper training. Chin implants can vary dramatically in shape, size and quality and need to be selected carefully and individually for each patient.
Recovery time after chin augmentation will depend upon several factors including technique and treatment approach. Based on the recommended technique, your EVOLV provider will review all your anticipated recovery process and give recommendations on post treatment care.
Chin implants are permanent and will therefore have the longest lasting effect of all augmentation options. Injectable fat augmentation may last for many years while fillers, depending on which type selected, approximately 9 months to 2 years but will gradually diminish. Maintenance programs will also be reviewed with you to keep the quality of your natural enhancement consistent.
