Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

What is PRP Therapy?

Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP refers to a mixture of a patient’s own cells and growth factors that can be used to rejuvenate aging or damaged skin and tissues. Benefits include reducing fine lines and aging changes in the facial skin, restoring volume loss and improving texture and tone, reducing acne and other scars, and reducing hair loss while stimulating new growth.

Who is a good candidate?

The use of a patient’s own tissue and native growth factors to repair, restore and rejuvenate is the fundamental concept of the new science of Regenerative Medicine. This exciting cell targeted therapy is the most natural and long lasting treatment method in aesthetic rejuvenation. PRP is obtained by drawing a patient’s blood, separating and processing the components, and then extracting the platelets and specific growth factors. Because PRP is obtained from the patient’s own blood it is a much more natural and effective stimulation than other sources or options. A consultation with Dr. Barone can help determine if PRP Therapy is a good option for you.

What to expect with PRP Therapy

PRP is obtained by drawing the patient’s blood and placing it in a special processing tube that can isolate certain components. The tube is then placed in a centrifuge for a specific time and spin rate that will separate various components. Within the separated material is a layer of concentrated platelets, growth factors and signaling proteins that are used for the treatment.

How is PRP used and what are the benefits?

PRP is a powerful and natural product that can be used in a variety of ways in aesthetic medicine:

  • Applied with micro needling or injected (sometimes called the ‘Vampire Facelift’) to improve all areas of skin rejuvenation including fine lines, texture, tone and scars (acne, stretch marks, others)
  • Natural hair restoration and regrowth. PRP alone or combined with a patient’s own fat and stem cells offers the most powerful and long lasting stimulation for new hair growth while reducing hair loss. Combination therapy is most effective.
  • Volume restoration for facial rejuvenation, buttock and breast enhancement and breast reconstruction when combined with natural fat grafts and native stem cells.
  • Treatment of radiation damage (breasts and traumatic scars and stretch marks).

PRP therapy, fat grafting and stem cell enrichment are the basics of Regenerative Medicine and a very exciting new potential in aesthetics by using the patient’s own natural tissue and products.
