Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty), is a surgical procedure that reduces the size of the breasts, as well as improves support of the breast tissues and skin. Overly large breasts may cause not only physical pain and discomfort but can also be a source of emotional stress and self-image problems.
In some cases, breast reduction surgery can be considered a reconstructive procedure and may be covered by health insurance when it is performed to relieve medical symptoms.

Dr. Barone has extensive experience in surgical techniques which reduce scarring and improve natural breast shape. In many cases, VASER Liposuction
is used in combination with the surgical procedure to address the excess fat under the arm or on the side of the breast that many women complain of.Whatever the priorities may be, our staff takes the time to get to know each patient personally, and special consideration is taken to design each surgical plan around the individual’s family life, activities and lifestyle.
“I can’t tell you how much I appreciate having you as my surgeon for my recent breast reduction procedure. I have thought about getting it done for years – but one thing or another became a priority & I postponed having this much needed operation. I am so happy with the results & couldn’t be more satisfied with my experience at your office!” – C.S.
- What are the benefits of Breast Reduction?
The individualized approach at evolv Plastic Surgery not only reduces the excess breast tissue but also lifts and supports the breast to a natural and balanced shape for each patient’s anatomy. When done properly, breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty) also reduces most of the symptoms associated with large breasts, including shoulder, back and neck pain, skin rash, and specific clothing issues. The most significant patient benefit may be improved self-esteem and confidence. For many women, success in healthy weight loss or maintenance is also possible because of improved ability for physical activity.
- Is breast reduction covered by medical insurance?
Medical insurance may provide coverage for breast reduction surgery for select patients that meet certain criteria. These requirements can vary depending on each specific insurance company. Many companies require documentation of “conservative treatment” to help with symptoms associated with large breast size, which we submit to your insurance company for a pre-determination of medical necessity. We ask that you bring any notes with you to your consultation from your primary care physician, chiropractor, physical therapist or other provider that will provide evidence that you have attempted other ways of treating your symptoms.
Typically, with Dr. Barone’s limited incision technique to reduce post-operative scars, lateral breast and under arm fat excess is reduced with VASER Liposuction, which is not covered by insurance. Our nursing staff and patient coordinator will discuss all of these options with you after your consultation.
- Can breast tissue regrow after breast reduction?
In most cases, breast reduction surgery is considered after breast development is completed, so regrowth of breast tissue is not typical. Because breast size can be influenced by overall body weight, significant weight gain or loss can influence overall breast shape. Healthy weight loss and lifestyle choices are strongly encouraged before and after breast reduction surgery as well as all aesthetic procedures at evolv Plastic Surgery in order to reduce operative risk, maintain post procedure results and optimize outcomes.
- Will I be able to breastfeed and have normal feeling in my nipples after breast reduction?
The ability to breastfeed cannot be predicted after breast reduction because it is influenced by multiple factors including how much tissue is removed, technique, surgeon experience, patient age and heredity. In Dr. Barone’s approach and limited incision technique, every attempt is made it leave the milk ducts intact so that breastfeeding can be possible. In the related issue of feeling in the nipple area and breast skin, temporary diminishment or loss of feeling is expected in some areas but returns to normal in most cases. Return of sensation is also influenced by the extent of breast reduction, amount of sag or laxity, age and surgical technique. Selective removal of excess breast fat by VASER Liposuction is very beneficial in preserving sensory nerves.
- What is the average recovery time after breast reduction?
As is true in most surgical procedures, recovery time is variable for each patient and influenced by the extent of surgery needed, technique, individual patient anatomy, overall health status and age. Dr. Barone frequently uses long-acting nerve blocks in surgery to reduce post-operative discomfort. Surgical drains are not used in breast reduction and all sutures are internal and dissolvable. Evolv Plastic Surgery believes in minimizing post-operative patient discomfort by using anti-inflammatory supplements, lymphatic massage and desensitization techniques (such as the long-acting nerve block.)
- What determines my final size and how much reduction is best?
The goals of breast reduction at our practice are to restore balance to the body, preserve the natural shape and contour of the breasts, as well as to reduce the symptoms and discomfort of excessively large breasts. Individual patient goals are also important and influenced by height, weight, age and personal preference.
