Breast Augmentation (Enhancement with Implants)

What is Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Breast Augmentation (Augmentation Mammoplasty) is a surgical procedure which can enlarge or enhance the shape of the breasts as well as improve contour. This is a very safe and effective procedure with a high patient satisfaction rate when performed on an appropriate candidate by a well-trained and experienced plastic surgeon. Enhancing the breasts through the use of implants and/or fat grafting can provide women with a more proportional shape which can, in turn, improve body image and self-esteem. It is important to understand that breast augmentation surgery cannot correct drooping breasts, as this can only be corrected with a breast lift.

Dr. Barone’s philosophy on breast augmentation, along with all of the procedures at evolv Plastic Surgery, is a balanced, natural-looking result that works in proportion with the rest of the woman’s body.  Our staff takes the time to get to know each patient personally, and special consideration is taken to design each surgical plan around the individual’s unique anatomy and personal goals.

“Prior to my surgery, I felt good about myself, however I knew I wanted to make a change.  You have made me feel so beautiful!  You are quite a talented surgeon.  The care that you and your staff provide both prior to and after surgery is very comforting.”  T.R.

  • Who is a candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Many women have found a number of benefits in enhancing the shape and symmetry of their breasts.  Creating a natural appearing and balanced result with a safe and proven technique is the focus of Dr. Barone’s approach.  If you are over the age of 18, physically healthy and have realistic expectations, you may be a candidate for breast augmentation or enhancement.

You may also be a good candidate if:

    • Your breasts are fully developed
    • You are unhappy with your small breasts
    • Your breasts are asymmetrical
    • Your breasts have an elongated shape or failed to develop normally

The best way to determine if you are a candidate for breast augmentation is to meet with Dr. Barone and his nursing staff for a thorough discussion of the procedure.

  • Is Breast Augmentation safe?

Yes, breast augmentation has been proven to be safe and effective under the following circumstances:

Multiple long-term clinical research studies have confirmed the safety of breast implants when the above criteria are met, and appropriate patient selection is followed.

Dr. Barone and Susie Szaroleta, RN, have been involved in clinical research on breast implant safety and effectiveness and have authored published studies in their use.

  • What is the cost for Breast Augmentation?

There are several considerations in determining the cost of breast augmentation.  The surgeon’s fee, the type of the implants (silicone gel or saline) and the manufacturer, anesthesia and the surgical facility are all involved and can vary widely.

Costs of breast augmentation may include:

    • Anesthesia fees
    • Surgical facility costs
    • Medical testing
    • Surgeon’s fee (will vary depending on skill level, technique and years of expertise)
    • Implants (silicone or saline)
    • Prescriptions for medication

Dr. Barone’s policy is to only use breast implants from the three major and most researched companies, Allergan, Mentor, and Sientra, and to only perform the procedure in a fully accredited outpatient surgery center with a board-certified anesthesiologist and an experienced nursing staff involved.  Be sure to check all of these fundamentals when comparing costs for breast augmentation surgery.

  • How do I know which type and size implant are best for my Breast Augmentation?

The choice of implant size and type, either gel or saline, are determined after a complete history and physical exam, anatomic measurements, and a review of your aesthetic goals with Dr. Barone.  Three-dimensional imaging and a review of our previous patient’s photos can also help you to communicate your preferences and desired outcome to Dr. Barone and our nursing staff.

Dr. Barone and Nurse Susie also use a unique intraoperative measuring implant and a specific positioning table to determine final implant dimensions during surgery.  Using this system, patient satisfaction for breast size and shape post-surgery has been extremely high.

  • How uncomfortable will I be after Breast Augmentation?

The amount and duration of discomfort after breast augmentation surgery is based on several factors:

    • Implant position (under or over the chest wall muscle)
    • Surgical technique
    • Individual anatomic factors
    • Nerve blocks

Dr. Barone and his surgical nurses will discuss these factors with you at your consultation and in more depth at your pre-op visit.  The use of gentle surgical technique and a new 72-hour injectable pain block medication, Exparel, have dramatically reduced recovery time and improved patient comfort in breast augmentation as well as many other aesthetic procedures at our practice.

  • What is the typical recovery time after breast implant surgery?

Recovery time is an individual process and is influenced primarily by surgical technique, implant position, and postoperative comfort.  In general, if implants are placed under the muscle (submuscular) the recovery time can be slightly longer. Dr. Barone’s meticulous and gentle techniques, intraoperative pain blocks with Exparel, naturopathic anti-inflammatory supplements, and lymphatic massage are utilized and can significantly shorten recovery times.  Surgical drains are typically not used in this procedure at evolv Plastic Surgery, and a provided postoperative bra will be worn for several weeks after surgery.  Most light activities can be resumed gradually within one week, but some activities will take several weeks to resume.  Dr. Barone and our nursing staff will make recommendations for you based on your lifestyle and how you are recovering post-operatively. It is important to follow the specific post-operative instructions given to you by Dr. Barone to ensure a safe and quick recovery.
