Breast Augmentation

This is a very safe and effective procedure with a high patient satisfaction rate when performed on an appropriate candidate by a well-trained and experienced plastic surgeon. Enhancing the breasts through the use of implants and/or fat grafting can provide women with a more proportional shape which can, in turn, improve body image and self-esteem. It is important to understand that breast augmentation surgery cannot correct drooping breasts, as this can only be corrected with a breast lift.

Breast Augmentation candidates

Many women have found a number of benefits in enhancing the shape and symmetry of their breasts.  Creating a natural appearing and balanced result with a safe and proven technique is the focus of evolv’s approach.  If you are over the age of 18, physically healthy and have realistic expectations, you may be a candidate for breast augmentation or enhancement.

You may also be a good candidate if:

  • Your breasts are fully developed
  • You are unhappy with your small breasts
  • Your breasts are asymmetrical
  • Your breasts have an elongated shape or failed to develop normally

The best way to determine if you are a candidate for breast augmentation is to meet with Dr. Frank Barone or Dr. Peter Koltz for a thorough discussion of the procedure.

Is Breast Augmentation safe?

Yes, breast augmentation has been proven to be safe and effective under the following circumstances:

  • The procedure is performed by a qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon
  • Surgery is performed in an accredited surgical center
  • The surgeon utilizes FDA-approved, appropriately selected breast implants

Multiple long-term clinical research studies have confirmed the safety of breast implants when the above criteria are met, and appropriate patient selection is followed.

Dr. Barone and Dr. Koltz have extensive experience in implant options and surgical techniques for an individualized approach for each patient.

Our plastic surgeons and Susie Szaroleta, RN, have been involved in clinical research on breast implant safety and effectiveness and have authored published studies in their use.

Breast Augmentation costs

There are several considerations in determining the cost of breast augmentation.  The surgeon’s fee, the type of the implants (silicone gel or saline) and the manufacturer, anesthesia and the surgical facility are all involved and can vary widely.

Costs of breast augmentation may include:

  • Anesthesia fees
  • Surgical facility costs
  • Medical testing
  • Surgeon’s fee (will vary depending on skill level, technique and years of expertise)
  • Implants (silicone or saline)
  • Prescriptions for medication

At evolv, our policy is to only use breast implants from the three major and most researched companies, Allergan, Mentor, and Sientra, and to only perform the procedure in a fully accredited outpatient surgery center with a board-certified anesthesiologist and an experienced nursing staff involved.  All procedures are confidentially performed. Be sure to check all of these fundamentals when comparing costs for breast augmentation surgery.

Implant type and size

The choice of implant size and type, either gel or saline, are determined after a complete history and physical exam, anatomic measurements, and a review of your aesthetic goals with our plastic surgeons in Toledo.

At evolv Plastic Surgery and Medical Aesthetics, we offer Vectra® 3-Dimensional Imaging for precise and personalized planning based on your natural anatomy.

Dr. Barone and Dr. Koltz also use a unique intraoperative measuring implant and a specific positioning table to determine final implant dimensions during surgery.  Using this system, patient satisfaction for breast size and shape post-surgery has been extremely high.

Post surgery expectations

The amount and duration of discomfort after breast augmentation surgery is based on several factors:

  • Implant position (under or over the chest wall muscle)
  • Surgical technique
  • Individual anatomic factors
  • Nerve blocks

Dr. Barone or Dr. Koltz will discuss these factors with you at your consultation and in more depth at your pre-op visit.  The use of gentle surgical technique and a new 72-hour injectable pain block medication, Exparel, have dramatically reduced recovery time and improved patient comfort in breast augmentation as well as many other aesthetic procedures at our practice.

Recovery time

Recovery time is an individual process and is influenced primarily by surgical technique, implant position, and postoperative comfort. In general, if implants are placed under the muscle (submuscular) the recovery time can be slightly longer.

Dr. Koltz and Dr. Barone employ options and advanced techniques to reduce discomfort and downtime, including, intraoperative pain blocks with Exparel, naturopathic anti-inflammatory supplements, and lymphatic massage are utilized and can significantly shorten recovery times.

Surgical drains are typically not used in this procedure at evolv Plastic Surgery & Medical Aesthetics, and a provided postoperative bra will be worn for several weeks after surgery. Most light activities can be resumed gradually within one week, but some activities will take several weeks to resume. We will make recommendations for you based on your lifestyle and how you are recovering post-operatively. It is important to follow the specific post-operative instructions given to you by Dr. Barone or Dr. Koltz to ensure a safe and quick recovery.
