Liposuction is a minimally invasive plastic surgery typically used to improve body contours or occasionally to thin a particular area of the body. Liposuction removes fat, not skin, so it is best used in areas with minimal amounts of excess skin and good skin elasticity. Liposuction is equally effective in both men and women. The technique is often combined with another contouring procedure to achieve optimal results.

In most cases, VASER Liposuction is suggested for our patients for improved patient comfort, minimizing downtime, and offering the latest innovative body contouring techniques available.

Liposuction Candidates

Liposuction can be used on virtually any part of the body including the abdomen, flanks, thighs, buttocks, upper arms, bra area, and under the chin.

Liposuction Patient Health

The procedure is not an alternative to weight loss however and should only be done when the patient is in their ideal weight range. For successful results, candidates should also have firm elastic skin. Those interested in liposuction should have realistic goals in mind and be able to maintain an optimistic outlook.

Candidates should not have any serious illnesses and should quit smoking prior to surgery to ensure proper healing. Patients who are undergoing another contouring procedure like a tummy tuck, breast lift, or body lift can often benefit from liposuction for optimal results.

Liposuction Procedure

Because liposuction is less invasive than a surgical procedure, patients will have the choice of local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia for their comfort. Tiny incisions will then be made in the target area where a small, tube-like device called a cannula can be inserted. Once inserted, the device is used to break up the stubborn fat cells, removing them with a gentle suction. The length of this process will depend on the extent of stubborn fat and the size of the area being treated.

In most cases, Dr. Frank Barone or Dr. Peter Koltz will recommend VASER Liposuction, or ultrasonic liposuction, which effectively breaks down fat cells before removal, virtually eliminating unnecessary trauma to surrounding areas.

Our plastic surgeons employ important long-acting nerve blocking medication, such as Exparel®, to improve healing time and minimize patient discomfort. All plastic surgery in Toledo is performed in a fully accredited facility with your comfort and safety as our top priority.

Liposuction Recovery & Results

After liposuction, patients will have some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the treated areas. Pain can be managed with a prescription medication or an over-the-counter pain medication. The exact recovery will depend on the size of the area that was treated and can vary from patient to patient. It is important to follow all post-op care instructions and physical restrictions to ensure a successful recovery for best results.

Once healed, patients can enjoy a smoother, slimmer contour from liposuction. Although weight cannot be gained in the areas where fat cells were removed, weight can still be gained in other non-treated areas. Therefore, patients should maintain their ideal weight after their procedure by ensuring a healthy diet and regular exercise.
