Urinary incontinence can affect men and women for a variety of reasons and is often caused by weak or ineffective pelvic floor muscles. The pelvic floor is composed of the bowl-shaped muscle group in the pelvic area which supports organs including the uterus, bladder, and rectum. evolv Plastic Surgery & Medical Aesthetics now offers BTL Emsella, a non-surgical and noninvasive treatment for urinary incontinence at our Toledo, Ohio office.
What is Emsella?
Emsella is a treatment for urinary incontinence that uses electromagnetic energy to help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. The treatment is non-invasive and stimulates the muscles to contract over 11,000 times during a single session, effectively strengthening and re-training them.
What Causes Urinary Incontinence?
Urinary incontinence, or the involuntary leaking of urine, can be the result of three different causes. The three types of urinary incontinence are:
Leakage caused by pressure on the bladder, sometimes made worse by coughing, laughing, sneezing, or exercising.
The sudden, frequent, and intense urge to urinate.
A combination of the two other types of urinary incontinence.
What To Expect From Emsella Treatment?
The BTL Emsella machine is composed of a large chair. During treatment, you may remain fully clothed, but it is recommended that you wear loose, comfortable clothing. You will be instructed to sit comfortably on the chair with your feet flat on the floor, shoulder-width apart and your knees at a 90-degree angle. One of our providers will help you ensure you are seated in the correct position.
When treatment starts, you will feel subtle tingling and vibrations in the pelvic floor muscles, followed by full contractions. The treatment should not cause discomfort; if you are uncomfortable, you must let the provider know so the treatment can be adjusted. Sessions last just under half an hour, during which time you may relax and may choose to watch television or read a book or magazine. Note that phones and other electronic devices must be kept away from the device during treatment.
Who Is A Candidate For Emsella?
Most patients suffering from urinary incontinence make good candidates for BTL Emsella treatment. However, those who have metal implants, tumors, heart disorders, or who are pregnant can not undergo the treatment. Dr. Barone or one of our providers will help you determine whether BTL Emsella is a suitable treatment for you.
