Breast Cancer Awareness……We all can make a difference!

Surgical Breast / October 5, 2020

October is here and in addition to the signs of change in the seasons, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This matters greatly because it is an opportunity to spread not only awareness, but also education about a disease that affects 1 in 8 women along with their families and friends, and unfortunately ends the life of more than 40,000 women each year in the U.S. alone.  On a personal as well as a professional note, I feel honored to have been involved with the care and reconstruction of breast cancer patients of all ages for more than 30 years.   It is encouraging and gratifying to be a part of their journey and to enjoy long-term relationships with such courageous and amazing patients that all of us at EVOLV consider friends.

There has been incredible progress and improvement in the prediction, diagnosis, treatment, and reconstruction of breast cancer which has resulted in reducing mortality rates overall as well as improving the quality of life for women as well as men dealing with breast cancer.  It is our hope at EVOLV Plastic Surgery and Medical Aesthetics, that promoting education and awareness about breast cancer may help improve and even save a life.  Here are some interesting educational points and facts to consider:

– Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer worldwide in women

– 1 woman will lose her life to breast cancer every 8 minutes

– 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime

– Approximately every 2 minutes, a female is diagnosed with breast cancer

– Excess alcohol use increases the risk of breast cancer

– Nearly 3.5 million breast cancer survivors are currently alive in the U.S.

– 1 in 1,000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer or approximately 2,500 per year in the U.S.

– Less than 10% of individuals diagnosed have a family history of breast cancer

It is our hope at EVOLV that we can raise breast cancer awareness in our workplace, homes, and community to benefit patients and families dealing with this long-term challenge to their lives, health, and quality of living.  There are many options for anyone to get involved so please inquire at our office or with any of our EVOLV staff about the many awareness opportunities available.  EVOLV will be featuring several educational and other promotions to benefit this very worthy and personal cause.
