Breast Reconstruction

Welcome to EVOLV Plastic Surgery & Medical Aesthetics! Meet Dr. Frank Barone, a highly skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon with an advanced fellowship in aesthetics and reconstructive breast surgery. Dr. Barone’s goal is to rebuild the breast after a partial or total mastectomy, meticulously crafting a breast that perfectly aligns with each patient’s desires. With expertise in correcting and enhancing previous reconstruction procedures, Dr. Barone addresses each patient’s needs with precision and utmost care.

What is a Breast Reconstruction Treatment?

Breast reconstruction utilizes several plastic surgery techniques to restore a breast to near-normal shape and appearance following mastectomy. In Toledo, Ohio, patients seeking breast reconstruction present with diverse characteristics and experiences. These include recent or remote breast cancer diagnoses. Some individuals express dissatisfaction or discomfort following previous reconstruction procedures. Others face a new breast cancer diagnosis and intend to undergo complete breast reconstruction, either unilaterally or bilaterally. Additionally, some patients opt for breast conservation, undergoing partial mastectomy (lumpectomy), yet aspire to achieve an improved breast size or shape post-surgery. Such patients are excellent candidates for combined tumor removal and oncoplastic breast reshaping techniques during tumor resection procedures.

How It Works

Breast reconstruction surgery is a complex and challenging procedure that requires the expertise of a highly skilled plastic surgeon like Dr. Barone at EVOLV Plastic Surgery. The surgery typically involves using various techniques to rebuild a breast that has been removed or disfigured due to cancer. It can be done immediately after mastectomy or delayed until a later time. Depending on the patient’s unique needs, the surgeon may use tissue from other body parts, such as the abdomen, back, or buttocks, or implant a breast prosthesis to restore the natural shape and size of the breast. Nipple and areola reconstruction may also be included in the process. The reconstruction involves multiple surgeries and can take several months. Opting for breast reconstruction surgery can provide women with a sense of closure and help restore their self-esteem and confidence after a traumatic experience.

What It Treats

The reasons for considering breast reconstruction or surgery can vary, such as the complete absence of the breast following a mastectomy, disfigurement after a partial mastectomy, or discomfort and poor aesthetic outcome after prior reconstruction. It may also treat individuals with a new breast cancer diagnosis, who are planning to have the removal of all breast tissue, or those planning a partial mastectomy or lumpectomy and aim to combine tumor removal with reshaping or reduction of overall breast tissue through oncoplastic surgery. Additionally, individuals who experience asymmetry, unnatural appearance, pain, or complications from previous breast surgery may also consider breast reconstruction.

Benefits

Benefits include improved quality of life after a cancer diagnosis, decreased discomfort after prior breast reconstruction, improved cosmetic outcome following failed reconstruction efforts, and the option for reconstruction with or without an implant. Treatment options include tissue expander or tissue flap reconstruction after partial or total mastectomy. Additionally, improved contour and aesthetic outcomes can be achieved using FDA-approved and state-of-the-art techniques such as tissue expanders, implants, tissue flaps, and fat grafting. Natural breast reconstruction using FDA-approved cohesive gel implants is also available when appropriate.

Step by Step

Consultation

We will thoroughly discuss your medical history, personal motivations, and goals during your complimentary consultation in Toledo. We will provide an in-depth overview of the options and customize a comprehensive plan tailored to your needs. Ultimately, we are here to support you in making the most informed decision that aligns with your current life circumstances Our focus is to ensure that your treatment fulfills your aspirations.

Before The Procedure

The necessity for a brief inpatient stay or an outpatient approach will vary depending on the type of surgical procedure performed. To ensure both safety and comfort, the majority of procedures require the administration of general anesthesia.

During The Procedure

The incision required for breast reconstruction varies depending on the breast shape, desired outcome, selected reconstruction type, and donor site (if applicable). Our goal is to achieve the best possible breast contour and minimize scar length. Achieving your desired size and shape may require multiple procedures, such as tissue expansion, fat grafting, implants, or single-step reconstruction. For symmetry, a procedure on the opposite breast may also be necessary. During your consultation, will discuss your options and aim to complete the reconstruction in as few steps as possible. We prioritize pain management by offering long-acting pain blocks or a nerve stimulator to minimize the use of narcotic pain medication. Incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures, and appropriate dressings and bra are applied. Drain usage is minimized and used only when necessary.

After The Procedure

After surgery, you will visit your surgeon at the office the following week. The frequency of your visits will depend on the type of reconstruction, ranging from weekly visits to a few visits over the subsequent months. Most patients will have closely monitored follow-ups during the initial weeks for optimal results and to minimize complications. It is important to note that the staged approach to breast reconstruction in Toledo, Ohio, may not immediately showcase the final result.
