How Microblading/Shading Can Transform Your Eyebrow Game

Microblading / January 16, 2020

Even when trends change, the eyebrows remain an important part of your facial profile. They help shape your expressions and convey emotions, as well as play a cosmetic role in framing your face and eyes. That being said, not everyone has the eyebrows they’d prefer to have, and for various reasons. If your brows are sparse, shapeless, uneven, or over-tweezed, then Permanent Makeup can be an excellent way to achieve natural-looking, full eyebrows that flatter your look. Here’s what to know about what microblading and shading is and how it can help.

What is Microblading?

Microblading is a tattooing technique that creates fuller brows. It utilizes a handheld, pen-like tool tipped with 12 to 18 tiny needles that lightly scratch the skin and deposit pigment. This creates delicate, hair-like strokes that can mimic the appearance of real hairs. Microblading is a form of tattooing but, unlike traditional tattoos which go through the first three layers of skin, the pigment is only etched into the skin’s superficial layer.

Results typically last one to three years. The brows’ lifespan depends on your age, lifestyle, and skin type— for example, the ink will fade faster on oily skin. The first touchup is recommended between 8 and 12 weeks after your appointment.  After that, touchups are recommended every 18 to 24 months to maintain ideal coloring.

What is Shading?

Shading can be done manually or with a rotary machine. Ombre powder brows is a technique that heals very soft and airy as if you just perfectly filled in your brows.  Shading can be very soft and subtle or intensified for a dramatic look. Shading is less invasive than microblading and better suited for sensitive skin. Most clients choose a combination of both hair-strokes and shading which can look the most natural for very sparse brows.

What Happens During Your Appointment?

Your appointment begins with the consultation. Any questions about the procedure or aftercare are addressed. Goals for shape, color, and style will be discussed and then we will decide what the best fit for you is. Depending on the style you are trying to achieve or the maturity of your skin or other possible factors you may not be a candidate for hair-stokes, but rather a fully shaded eyebrow. First, your brow area is cleansed and then the shape will be mapped out and approved by you. The procedure area is then numbed followed by color swatching to find the best fit for your brows.

Then, the microblading procedure will begin by your provider making superficial cuts and depositing pigment with a specialized handpiece. A final layer of pigment may be added, and then the area is cleaned. The first session generally takes two to three hours.

Does Microblading Hurt?

While each person’s pain threshold is different, microblading is generally known to range from painless to mildly uncomfortable. It’s been described as feeling like a scratching or stinging sensation. This can be helped with a topical anesthetic so you can remain relaxed and comfortable.

What Happens After Microblading?

It’s essential to follow your specific aftercare instructions. Don’t put any makeup on your new brows or pick or peel the area. Don’t get your brows wet for two weeks (although you should clean them every morning with a gentle cleanser recommended by our office). This includes keeping your brow area dry while in the shower and avoiding any activity causing sweat. After treatment, the skin begins to heal itself. The brows will first appear too dark in color and then the flaking begins. As your skin is forming a new layer over your tattoo the new skin will appear milky,  hiding some of the pigment making your brows appear light or uneven. It takes two sessions to build the brows so it is necessary to come back between 8-12 weeks once your skin is healed and the true color can be seen for a touch-up.

How Does Microblading/shading Give the Perfect Eyebrow?

Where age, habit, and lifestyle may have taken a toll on your eyebrows, This procedure can restore them to perfection. Microblading/shading creates dramatically transformed eyebrows that hold their shape and look fresh all day, every day. It eliminates struggles with liners, pencils, powders, and gels that smear, fade, or don’t get you the results you want. You won’t need to worry about filling in eyebrows every day, meaning you can look fresh and rejuvenated without having to worry about your routine.
